What does balancing your system mean?
You will have most likely heard the term “balance your system” with reference to your home heating and radiators, and hope you will read this and understand more as to what exactly this means. But first, let me explain why you may have been told to balance your system.
Why do I need to balance my heating system?
If you have a radiator or multiple radiators in your home that don’t get warm when other radiators do, then balancing your system may be one of many different solutions that could solve it. There are many different reasons that a radiator might not get hot, but in the case of balancing your system, it is most likely that the hot water is being drawn into other radiators before that radiator.
By balancing your system, you are making it so that the hot water going around the heating is being shared all the way around the system instead of being drawn to others first.
How to balance your radiator system
First off you need to identify your valves, you will either have 2 lockshield valves, or 1 TRV and 1 lock shield either side of the radiator. You need to make sure that they are fully open on all of your radiators. Make sure that the central heating is on and then start to go around each of your radiators.
Continue to do this until the radiators that didn’t get warm are now warm. If you find that the opposite has now happened and that the warmest is now cold, then simply open it up another half turn and the same for any other radiators that seem colder.

Balancing your heating system doesn’t only get other radiators warm in your house, it also increases the efficiency of your home as your boiler isn’t working as hard to get the water around your house as it is being shared equally around the house and not being sent to some radiators and not all.
